The Proxima Class was a Battleship used by the Federation during the mid-to-late 23rd Century.

History

As a non-canon vessel, there's next to no information known about the Proxima Class, although much can be theorized. Because of the way the Proxima is built, it could suggest that it was meant as an experimental design, with it's double secondary hulls and deflector dishes. Around the time the Proxima was made, the Federation had also developed the Federation Class, another battleship.

This could suggest that they perceived the threat from the Klingons and the Romulans had grown in some way, perhaps from the technologies exchanged during the short-lived alliance between the empires.

As impractical as the design is, it could be suggested that the Proxima would have made a good battleship. It's quite a large ship, allowing for bigger, more powerful phaser banks and photon torpedo launchers. It's double deflector dishes on each secondary hull, combined, could produce a formidable shield, though just how effective it would be in practice is unknown, due to the power requirements. Ships of this time were usually only run on a standard Constitution Class warp core and even with two, the power demands would likely be high, again suggesting the Proxima wasn't immediately a production ship.

Any pre-production bugs must have been sorted, however, since the Proxima Class went on to be refitted with the rest of the fleet to bring it into the TMP Era of the late 23rd Century. This Proxima Class kept it's unique features, it's double deflector dishes were upgraded and the warp nacelles were replaced with the equivalent of the era, enabling it to join the Federation Class in it's upgrade to the Star League Class.

In Ultimate Universe

The Proxima Class was generally condemned by the Legacy Community when the game was released, mainly because most thought it was really ugly, with it's double secondary hulls and four warp nacelles, which was uncharacteristic of any ship of this period.

It also irritated people because the ship, despite being called the Proxima, never had a USS Proxima registry as stock, which was a custom with most, if not all, Federation Starships.

As well as this, the ship was released with the meaningless mistake by MadDoc modelers of using the registry NCX-3116 for the USS Philadelphia, simply because they appear to have accidentally pushed X instead of C when typing the registry and didn't fix it. They fixed this problem for the Proxima Refit, but replaced that error by making four more, in the shape of adding an "A" prefix to each refit's registry, even giving a "C" to one registry, suggesting A and B disappeared or never existed. This fact pails in comparison, when you consider none of them should have had an "A" prefix at all. The only ship ever to canonly have a letter added to it's prefix is the USS Enterprise, as flagship of the fleet, though Ultimate Universe agreed to the Vivace Class USS Voyager-A, due to Voyager's unusual and epic voyage.

Its design was also illogical, pairing two warp nacelles together on each side. It is generally accepted that warp nacelles are kept apart from each other for a reason, some suggesting that radiation generated by the nacelles could be damaging to the safety of the ship and crew.

It was always important, however, to note that it did have its fans.

Eventually, the TOS Proxima in the Ultimate Universe mod was replaced by the much more popular Federation Class, though the TMP Proxima remained when the Star League Class came along. As mentioned, the TOS Proxima did have its fans and they missed being able to play the ship.

In late 2009, however, Phoenix decided to bring the TOS Proxima back to the Ultimate Universe, not in its ugly original design, but a new TOS design for the ship, remaking the original components of the ship and replacing parts that didn't look right on the original.

Improvements include dual Federation Class-like deflector dishes on each end of the secondary hulls and replacing the warp nacelles with proper, TOS looking engines.

The Ultimate Universe TOS Proxima Class will be released in The Ultimate Universe: Origins, Coming Soon...
